How Wooden Toys Build Active Minds

Let’s say you need a few uninterrupted moments to cook dinner or answer work emails. It’s pretty typical for parents to give children an electronic tablet and tell them to amuse themselves for a bit.

But it’s also just as easy to hand a child a set of blocks! And the lack of electronic stimulation offers big benefits for a child’s development.

Let’s take a closer look at two very different play experiences: a humble set of wooden blocks and a glowing, beeping tablet.

Blocks: Quiet toys build active brains

Give a toddler a set of blocks. No script. No instructions. No “correct” outcome. It’s all open-ended play, baby!

Open-ended play encourages children to:

  • Experiment with balance and gravity
  • Build math and spatial reasoning skills
  • Practice storytelling and language
  • Strengthen fine motor skills

Tablets: Noisy toys build dull brains

By contrast, consider the tablet. It lights up, it beeps and squawks, and it rewards taps with instant feedback. And while some digital content can be educational, passive scrolling or repetitive tapping often:

  • Reduces opportunities for hands-on exploration
  • Limits imaginative and critical thinking
  • Encourages short attention spans with constant novelty
  • Replaces internal conversations with consumption

So picture this:

At the kitchen table, one toddler is stacking blocks into a wobbly tower. In their heads, they’re narrating each move. “This one goes here…Wait! No! It fell down! I need to fix it! I’ll try again!”

Meanwhile, at the home next door, another toddler is swiping through videos, eyes glued and fingers flicking. Their internal monologue is mostly silent.

Both children are happily occupied. But only one is actively thinking. And the child playing with blocks is building skills that transfer beyond a singular moment.

The next time you feel like using a tablet or the TV as a babysitter, take a beat. The electronic device will almost certainly entertain your child.

But wooden toys? They build minds and motor skills while they entertain. And of course, the lack of beeping noises may save your sanity, as well!
